Well L.A. was a rockin’ vibe!

I got invited to a load of parties (didn’t go as I was working until crazy hours showing the collection to buyers) - drank numerous Cosmopolitans - ate far too much Mexican - and also managed to introduce the Madeleine Press collection to lots of lovely new stores, (and our wonderful existing stockists too).

Our beautiful Pima cotton handknits drew a few puzzled faces, (…but it’s L.A.? …It’s Summer?…Oh wow!!), but once we did the little fashion show in our suite to show how they are worn, everyone clicked and all was good.

Very tuckered out now, got a couple of days off to recharge and then it’s back to the coal face. Speak to you soon.

We’re sort of in silent running mode at the studio now.

We’re in that really short period between seasons where we are deep into production of our Spring Summer collection while also developing the new Autumn Winter collection to show in Jan/Feb of 08. It’s crazy that the show schedules are so screwy - leaving you with the shortest time to develop your more challenging collection. Someone needs to really sort this out - maybe a designer work-to-rule???

We’ve been asked a million times about our dress that Lily Allen wore in her video for her breakthrough single ‘Smile’. It was a calypso pink summer dress from our Spring Summer 2006 collection - the amazing Broderie Anglaise cotton fabric was designed especially for us by a specialist mill in Japan. Unfortunately, we don’t have any left now (sorry), and in true fashion style we’ve moved on and are now designing Autumn Winter 08/09! I’m off to Tokyo again in a couple of weeks.

I’ve been the Creative Director of an amazing Japanese brand called MANOUQUA for the last couple of years, and it means I get to out there about four times a year. Very knackering but totally inspirational, and gives me a real kick which I can translate back into my own collection. The main influence is the attention to detail that we put into our manufacturing, but if you look closely you can see subtle design cues as well. Also, I know it’s a cliche, but the sushi and tempura are just amazing.
